LOWELL — UMass Lowell lifted a campus lockdown order late Wednesday afternoon, hours after a report of a potentially armed man spotted in the area forced students to shelter in place, the school said.

The person is still at large, but is believed to no longer be in the vicinity of campus, according to a community-wide message sent just before 5:30 p.m.

“A large police presence is being maintained on campus, and officers will be stationed at all residence halls overnight,” read the message.

Local and campus police were alerted Wednesday afternoon to reports of a male on the university’s South Campus, carrying an object “suspected of being a firearm,” prompting officials to issue a campus-wide shelter-in-place order, the university said in a statement.
