East Lansing — Michigan State University's trustees and president on Thursday defended holding a closed-door "stakeholder engagement" session with dozens of handpicked participants on university issues instead of holding an open meeting.
The stakeholder engagement session, attended by seven of the eight trustees and MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz, was meant to provide a space where students, faculty, alumni and other community members could share their ideas or concerns with the Michigan State leadership. The session was held in lieu of a board meeting, which is open to the public and press and held every few months.
