WAILUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A string of recent fires on Maui has community members on edge.

With limited evacuation routes and congested neighborhoods, some fear another Lahaina disaster is lingering.

“I don’t want to be the person who says, ‘Oh, well, I guess it won’t burn,’” said Wailuku town homeowner Susan Halas. “It will burn, and it will all burn!”

Halas lives less than a mile away from Piihana Road where she says frequent fires, including the one this past Tuesday, are taking a toll.

“One right after the other, Wailuku constantly filling up with smoke. The smell of burning rubber, your eyes irritated,” Halas said. “You could see from my house, you could see from anywhere in this area, you could see the smoke.”

Some fires have even triggered evacuations.
