The government's Emergency Alert system is being tested nationwide this weekend to ensure that the UK is prepared for unexpected situations like storms or floods.

Since it was last tested nationwide in April 2023, the Emergency Alert system has been deployed five times during major storms when lives were at risk, such as during Storm Darragh .

The test aims to check the alert system is working as it should, so that people can be warned when there is a danger to life nearby. The government has explained that by testing the system regularly, they can ensure that it continues to work correctly and reaches as many people as possible when it's needed most.

Just like testing smoke alarms or practising fire drills, these tests help ensure the system will work effectively during a real life
