Angela Rayner is facing a day of uncertainty with an expected judgement on whether she broke the ministerial standards rules after underpaying stamp duty on her new seafront apartment.

The Ashton-under-Lyne MP admitted failing to pay £40,000 tax on an £800,000 flat in Hove, East Sussex, which she purchased this year.

It comes as lawyers who the deputy prime minister blamed for her stamp duty underpayment denied giving her tax advice - claiming they have been made 'scapegoats'.

Political opponents have been calling for Sir Keir Starmer to sack his Stockport-born deputy, who also serves as the housing secretary.
