MAALEA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Maui-based nonprofit is sounding the alarm after a 20-foot shipping container was stolen from Maalaea Harbor.

The container is used by the Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF), the Center for Marine Debris Research, and Sharkastics, a community-based marine debris removal project.

It was reported missing from the harbor last Friday, Aug. 29.

Pacific Whale Foundation said that the container served as a collection hub for large-scale marine debris on Maui’s beaches and nearshore waters.

“This container was critical to our island-wide marine debris removal strategy,” said Susan Frett, PWF programs director. “Its theft not only delays our efforts but threatens the long-term health of Maui’s reefs and coastlines.”
