The Medical University of South Carolina's health system is expanding its reach up the South Carolina coast, moving to acquiring a greater stake in a struggling Georgetown-based hospital system.
The board of MUSC Health met the evening of Sept. 5 in a special called meeting to endorse acquiring an 85 percent interest in Tidelands Health . MUSC Health was already a partner of Tidelands with a 30 percent share, but this would allow MUSC Health greater control to aid and develop Tidelands, which has hospitals, rehabilitation centers and cancer treatment facilities.
The deal is expected to close in the coming months.
MUSC Health has a proven track record of turning around floundering health systems.
