CHARLESTON — The College of Charleston is mourning the death of Heather Hall, a graduate and professor who died in Portugal on Sept. 3 after a funicular lost control and crashed at high speed.

At least 17 people were killed in the crash at the bottom of a steep hill in Lisbon following a cable malfunction.

Hall was a professor in the Department of Teacher Education who specialized in literacy and special education. She also was a graduate of the College.

Fran Welch, the dean of the School of Education, said Hall’s death is “a tragic loss for all of us.”

“Heather’s untimely death occurred while she was in Lisbon to speak at a conference. As an alumna of the College and a dynamic instructor with a specialization is special education, she shared her love of travel with her students,” Welc
