There are concerns that the preference for Nottingham, Broxtowe and Gedling to merge in upcoming council shake-ups will be “thrown out” to make way for the city council ’s potential alternative plans.

Nottinghamshire County Council solidified its stance on the incoming reorganisation of the area’s councils in a meeting on Tuesday (September 2), which could see Nottingham, Broxtowe, and Gedling merged.

The Labour government announced its plans in December 2024 to redraw English councils to create more “strategic” unitary authorities.

This would see areas with two-tier systems, such as in Nottinghamshire, where council functions are split between the county council and district and borough councils, be redrawn to create fewer unitar
