Before he could begin to rest up and heal for this weekend’s three-day PBR Teams event at Honda Center in Anaheim, veteran bull rider Cody Jesus had another stop to make.

The Cody Jesus Invitational was held Monday in his hometown of Window Rock, Arizona, where he grew up on the sprawling Navajo Nation reservation with no running water or electricity, but plenty of livestock and wide open spaces.

This year’s invitational was originally scheduled for July 5 – the week before the PBR Teams series was set to begin – but the 11,000-acre Oak Ridge wildfire broke out the week before and burned for 10 days, forcing the postponement until Labor Day.

That date ran up against Jesus’ PBR schedule, but he was determined to be in Window Rock on Monday morning.
