MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — WKRG-TV marks its 70th anniversary on Friday, Sept. 5, celebrating decades of broadcasting local news and serving the Gulf Coast.

WKRG first signed on Sept. 5, 1955, as the CBS affiliate for the Mobile–Pensacola–Pascagoula market. Architect and theater owner Kenneth R. Giddens founded the station.

WKRG became known for its local programming, including "Woman’s World," a lifestyle show hosted by Connie Bea Hope and Estelle Payton that attracted appearances from celebrities such as "Little House on the Prairie" star Michael Landon; "Small Fry News," billed, "A big world from a young point of view featuring youngsters from your school"; and "Rosie's Place," featuring host and former teacher Rosie Seaman, which received national awards for its educational
