A man accused of killing his sister and injuring seven others in a mass stabbing on Hollow Water First Nation in Manitoba was out on bail at the time of the incident. Tyrone Simard, 26, was released from custody on June 12 after being charged with assault with a weapon and mischief for offenses that occurred on June 8.
Court records indicate that his release came with several conditions. These included a curfew and prohibitions against using drugs or alcohol and possessing weapons. Despite these restrictions, Simard allegedly attacked eight people at two homes on the First Nation, located northeast of Winnipeg, on Thursday.
The attack resulted in the death of his 18-year-old sister, while the other victims were taken to the hospital for treatment. Following the stabbings, Simard reportedly fled the scene in a stolen vehicle. He later died in a collision with an RCMP cruiser on the highway. An officer in the cruiser was also hospitalized as a result of the crash.
