A late-night dice game and cigarette run in Fort McKay turned into a drunken, meth-fuelled shooting and three-week manhunt ending with a guilty plea to manslaughter on Tuesday.

Anton Grandjambe, 23, appeared remotely from the Edmonton Remand Centre as he plead guilty to fatally shooting Russell Shott, 60, during the early morning hours of Dec. 5, 2023. A sentencing date will be decided on Nov. 18.

An agreed statement of facts read Tuesday in the Fort McMurray Court of Justice said the incident began when Shott, his wife and a friend were at Shott’s home playing dice. Shott ran out of cigarettes and went across the street to the home of Grandjambe’s uncle, Rusty. This is where Grandjambe was living at the time.
