The home hero produced a flying finish at the K Club to move ominously into joint-third heading into the County Kildare weekend. ‌

McIlroy was lagging a some way off the pace turning for home on day two, but fired up the burners in the closing stages and almost holed out for an albatross on his last hole through a stirring finale. ‌
