MACON, Ga. — Elaine Lucas, who represents District 1 for Macon Water Authority, announced at their meeting on Thursday that she has leukemia.

She tried to announce it as the meeting was being adjourned. She asked for a "point of personal privilege" after the adjournment motion had received a second.

"I'm just going to go ahead and say it, and those that want to listen can listen; everybody else, you can leave if you want," she said after a board member mentioned they had already adjourned.

"I wish to say that I have recently been diagnosed with leukemia and we're fighting the battle," she said.

The board members did not know she was going to make this announcement.
