DENVER (KDVR) -- Colorado Parks and Wildlife reminded Coloradans on Friday to be mindful of increased black bear activity, as the season changes to fall.
CPW said fall is when black bears enter their "hyperphagia," a natural phase of increased activity and "intense" eating done to prepare their bodies to survive the winter.
"Bears will be traveling up to 20 hours per day in search of food and chance encounters are likely to increase," CPW said in a release.
With this in mind, CPW said the public must be careful not to allow bears easy access to food sources, noting black bears attempt to consume 20,000 calories each day as they "pack on the pounds" to build up their fat reserves.
The agency said a bear's "annual quest for vital calories" often expands outside of their typical territory
