Changes may soon be coming to how Stratford’s Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) revenue is used.
On Monday, city council will discuss a recommendation by staff to establish an ad-hoc committee to determine uses for the revenue from what some call a “tourism tax.” Approved in 2022 and formally implemented in July 2023, this tax applies a four per cent charge on all room nights sold in the city through local hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, and short-term rentals, except where limited by legislation. The tax applies only to stays that last for less than 30 consecutive days.
