ROCHESTER — As autumn approaches, updated COVID-19 vaccines, along with their annual influenza counterparts, are becoming available.

For fall and winter 2025, "immunizations are an effective tool to reduce health risks for all populations from flu, COVID and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), and have a strong safety profile," according to the Vaccine Integrity Project, based at the University of Minnesota's Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy.

The federal government's guidance for who should receive a COVID shot, however, has recently changed.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Aug. 27 approved the 2025 COVID vaccines for all adults age 65 and older. For younger adults and most children, though, the FDA's approval is for those with "at least one underlying conditi
