The father of a 5-year-old boy who reportedly died from a fall was arrested in connection with his death, according to a news release from Louisville Metro Police.

Laron Gardner Jr., 24, of Louisville, was arrested Sept. 5 and faces charges of murder, criminal abuse and assault. He is currently being held in the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, officials said.

According to an arrest citation, MetroSafe received a call Sept. 2 about an unconscious 5-year-old boy in the 2900 block of Conestoga Avenue shortly after 3 p.m. When emergency services arrived, investigators said the child's injuries appeared more severe than initially reported.

The boy was taken to Norton Children’s Hospital in critical condition, but died from his injuries Sept. 3.
