DAPHNE, Ala. (WKRG) — For half a century, the men and women of Daphne Search and Rescue have answered the call for help to bring the missing and the lost home.
"We are pretty good at what we do," said Ronny Champion.
He has been a member of the unit since the early 90s. When he started, the organization only had a 21 Foot Carolina Skiff. Now, they use state-of-the-art sonar equipment, a new impact vessel, all operated by volunteers driven by a purpose.
"It's the knowing you are helping someone who needs help that can't help themselves," said Champion.
The idea for a search and rescue started 50 years ago at May Day Park, where a swimmer had drowned. The fire department responded, but they didn't have any divers, and it would take hours before any would arrive.
