NORFOLK, Va. — You used to be able to easily walk into your local pharmacy and get a COVID-19 vaccine, but with new FDA regulations, it might not be as simple in the future.
The next round of COVID-19 vaccines for 2025-2026 was approved by the FDA on Wednesday, but with restrictions. The shot would be available to people 65 and older or anyone at a high risk of the sickness.
Virginia is one of several states requiring a prescription for the vaccine at local pharmacies.
CVS is one of the pharmacies adhering to the new regulations. In a statement to 13News Now, they said:
“State pharmacy laws govern where we can currently vaccinate. Based on FDA approval, we currently can offer FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccines in the following states: AK, AL, AR, CA, CO, CT, DE, HI, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY
