A Multnomah County judge on Friday sentenced ex-Alaska Airlines pilot Joseph David Emerson to five years of probation and more than 600 hours of community service for endangering a plane and its passengers after consuming psychedelic mushrooms.

Emerson apologized to all those he put at risk when he reached for the levers to cut off the plane’s engines from the cockpit’s jumpseat and for taking the drug he said caused him to lose touch with reality as he was catching a ride home off-duty on a flight to California.
