Original artwork described as the first youth mural project in Santa Fe — dating back to the 1990s — won't remain on a Railyard building set for redevelopment.

But an architect involved in a plan to turn the long-shuttered Alvord Elementary School property into an all-suite, luxury hotel proposes to have the decades-old set of murals rebuilt and repainted in a new, more visible location, at a smaller size.

Members of the public who commented on the project during a city Planning Commission meeting Thursday night largely supported the plan, but they also urged architect Wayne Lloyd to consider making the replica as similar as possible to the original.
