MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis has seen its share of violence from downtown fights to shootings that made headlines on 901 Day. Many of the faces caught up in those incidents are young people.

Now, some students are saying enough is enough. At Whitehaven High School, youth are stepping up to change the narrative.

High School Senior Lauren Garcia told FOX13 the constant association between her community and crime weighs heavy.

“A lot of things, especially in our community, it feels like all we know is crime and violence,” Garcia said.

But Whitehaven students are showing there’s more to Memphis than that. Through a partnership with the Memphis Rainbow PUSH Coalition, they toured the Memphis Police Department’s Command Center, where they learned how the city is monitored for safety.
