CHEYENNE — The first Minuteman III silo is to be taken offline as one of the first steps in the broader Sentinel project, which will modernize existing U.S. Air Force intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) systems.

In a statement emailed to the Wyoming Tribune Eagle on Friday, Air Force Global Strike Command officials announced that the silo would be taken offline as a result of the administrative decertification of F.E. Warren Air Force Base’s Launch Facility (LF) 5E10.

With contractor Northrop Grumman, the project aims to modernize the land-based leg of the nation’s nuclear triad, replacing the aging Minuteman III with the LGM-35A Sentinel.
