No institution of Canadian government is more widely hated than the Senate.

This week, Manitoba senator Charles Adler — recently appointed to the upper house by former prime minister Justin Trudeau — reminded us why that’s the case.

revealed that Adler billed taxpayers for 13 round-trip flights between Ottawa and Toronto over a 14-week period. The total cost was just under $43,000, an eye-popping amount.

Adler blew through the money to fly back from Ottawa to his Winnipeg residence for the weekend. He typically left either Thursday or Friday and returned either Monday or Tuesday. When asked, Adler couldn’t provide any official reason for the travel.
