As NOSM University celebrates its 20th anniversary, it is marking what it calls a transformative milestone in its evolution as Canada’s only independent medical university. The institution has announced the launch of four new residency programs aimed at addressing critical physician shortages and improving access to health care across Northern Ontario.

A medical residency, which can last several years, is a period of intensive, supervised postgraduate training after medical school, allowing new doctors to specialize in a particular medical field through hands-on experience in hospitals or clinics.
