Davey Johnson, the manager of the 1986 World Series-winning New York Mets, died at 82, according to Jay Horwitz , the team’s longtime public relations director and historian. Horwitz wrote Saturday on Medium that he got the call from Johnson’s wife, Susan, around midnight.

Wrote Horwitz:

Davey was responsible for the most successful run in our history. From 1984–1990 , we won over 100 games twice and over 90 contests on two other occasions. His overall record was 595 (most wins by a Mets manager) and 417 losses, a winning percentage of .588.

Johnson began his career as a player in 1965 with the Baltimore Orioles. In his 13-year career, he made four All-Star teams and won three Gold Gloves as a second baseman. Johnson batted .261 with 136 home runs and 609 RBIs in his career.
