Thousands of LGBTQ Catholics, with their families and supporters, have participated in a holy year pilgrimage to Rome, walking through the holy door of St. Peter's Basilica.

They say they have long felt discriminated against, shunned by the Church, but now feel a level of welcome and acceptance that they attribute to Pope Francis.

Francis spent the better part of his pontificate insisting that the Catholic Church must a place of welcome. 'Todos, todos, todos' he used to say. These pilgrims now say they feel that.

They have been participating in vigils, talks, and masses around Rome, including one celebrated by an Italian bishop who drew a sustained standing ovation this morning when he told them it was time to restore to them the dignity that had been denied.
