PORTLAND, Maine — Music, games, and the sound of hair clippers were the anthems for a back-to-school event organized by a local Portland artist.

Chrizi Jamer brought together local nonprofit organizations and businesses to cut down on costs families face at the start of the school year.

“As an immigrant, I understand how it is to be in a foreign country with limited resources,” Jamer said. “Doing this is just important to do for families in need and the kids in need because the kids are our future, so it is important to be there for them.”

Barbers and hair stylists lined up their salon chairs to give free cuts and styling to those hoping to freshen up their look ahead of the school week.

Leo Lontange, a barber of 17 years, was one of the half-dozen trimming hair on Saturday.
