While students often regale their classmates with what they did on their summer vacation, a Chatham elementary school teacher has a pretty impressive story of her own.

Jane Baldwin-Marvell, a teacher at McNaughton Avenue Public School, took part in a historic 661-kilometre swimming relay that symbolically completed the final voyage of the Edmund Fitzgerald, marking the 50th anniversary of its sinking.

She was one of 68 swimmers selected to participate in the relay, which started above the wreck site in Lake Superior and finished in Detroit.

“I thought this was something that I want to be a part of,” she told The Daily News, adding there was a questionnaire to determine if an applicant was suitable.
