BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- An ongoing project at the corner of 19th and L streets in downtown has opened a portal into Bakersfield's past.

The construction work has exposed an exterior wall with slogans such as "Quality First. We Grow Our Own Vegetables. Prices Right."

But there's no surviving indication of the name of the grocery store or its owners. But after some research, it was learned it was most likely Bakersfield Grocery Company, which took over that corner from Lutz's Drug Store -- right next door the original Wickersham Jewelers -- in the 1920s.

The only visible name on that wall, in small letters at the bottom is that of Jack Dean, who likely was the sign painter.

No word yet on what the owner-developers have in mind for the project or whether the painted wall will surviv
