A 17-year-old boy died and four others were injured after a stolen car crashed during a police pursuit in New South Wales' Hunter Valley late Saturday night. The incident occurred just before midnight on the New England Highway at Aberdeen.
Police initiated a chase when the car, driven by a 14-year-old boy, failed to stop for officers. The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed approximately 100 meters north of Makybe Diva Street in Scone. Emergency services responded quickly, treating the driver and his front-seat passenger, who was the deceased 17-year-old.
The passenger died at the scene, while the driver was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. He is currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Three other passengers in the back seat, including two boys aged 14 and 17 and a 25-year-old woman, were also hospitalized with injuries that are not life-threatening.
Authorities believe the car was stolen from a business in Wallsend earlier that afternoon. All boys involved are reportedly from the Tamworth area, while the woman is from Newcastle.
In response to the crash, a critical incident investigation team has been assigned to examine the circumstances surrounding the event. This investigation will be independently reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
