Researchers at Simon Fraser University and Kwantlen Polytechnic University are testing to see if farmers can grow their crops without adding any supplemental water beyond what falls from the sky.

It’s called Dry farming and seen as important trials at a time when climate change is affecting summer temperatures and rainfall on Vancouver Island.

There are three trial sites, two on Vancouver Island and one on Salt Spring Island.

Yellow Boot Farm in Black Creek is one the trial sites.
