Coventry City Council more than halved what it spent on Christmas lights in two years, figures released this week show. £116,101 was spent in total for decorations in 2024 - around 58 percent less than 2022.

According to figures revealed by the council in a recent Freedom of Information request, £273,993 was spent in 2022, up from amount of £243,821 in 2021.

A turbulent economy has seen a tightening of purse strings, with £151,262 being spent in 2023. The decision to scrap the annual Christmas Lights Switch On may have contributed to the decrease in spending that was seen in 2024.

The council's response to the request also revealed they are working towards a slightly higher budget for this years festivities, with £131,032 currently set aside for it - though this is still significantly
