Boyle Heights - Firefighters freed a 30-year-old man this afternoon after he fell about 15 feet into a manhole in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles.
The situation was reported at 1:22 p.m. today in the 1100 block of South Boyle Avenue, near the junction of the Santa Monica (10), Santa Ana (5) and Hollywood (101) freeways, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department's Lyndsey Lantz.
Based on the patient's location in an underground space, authorities upgraded the rescue to a confined space operation, necessitating the employment of LAFD hazardous material specialists for air monitoring and an LAFD Urban Search and Rescue component for the technical hoist rescue, Lantz said.
