Things are bad when a standing ovation is given at a state agency meeting because officials managed to get through it without drama. Welcome to the Oklahoma State Board of Education.

This appreciation was given at Wednesday’s special meeting in defiance and absence of state Superintendent Ryan Walters, who put obstacles in place for members to add to an agenda or call a meeting.

The mismanagement of the agency by Walters is well-documented. Just consider the many damning audits, pending lawsuits, a grand jury critical commentary and national headlines for all the wrong reasons. Just last week, Oklahoma Watch reported that his chief policy adviser, earning a six-figure salary, has only been in the office four days in the first half of this year. A
