The dashing and dastardly Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan and his Raiders traveled 185 miles through southeastern Indiana, earning him the nickname “King of the Horse Thieves,” because on the way, he and his men stole 4,000 horses and raided over 4,300 homes and businesses.

For Morgan, invading Indiana during the Civil War was a lucrative endeavor, at least in the beginning of his raid. For history buffs, following the John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail — a self-directed 185-mile driving tour that connects points of interest along the path of Morgan and his Raiders — is an invitation to step back in time.
