When Pete Carroll returns to the NFL sidelines on Sunday as coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, he will make history.

Carroll, at 73 years and 357 days old, will become the league’s oldest head coach when his Raiders take on the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium.

Romeo Crenel held the record when he was 73 years and 199 years old for the Houston Texans in 2020 as the interim coach.

Carroll coached the Patriots from 1997-99.

Week 1 will also mark Carroll’s return to coaching after taking a year off in 2024. According to Masslive’s Karen Guregian , Carroll was out in the rain with the Raiders during warmups tossing the football around.

The 2025 season is Carroll’s first with the Raiders. He spent 14 years with the Seattle Seahawks and helped lead the team to 10 playoff bert
