EDENTON, N.C. — A familiar sound will soon return to downtown Edenton. After years of silence, the 134-year-old clock atop the Chowan County Courthouse will chime again following a successful restoration.
The community is invited to a public celebration at the courthouse, located at 117 E. King St., on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 4:45 p.m. Pamela Wagner, chairwoman of the Friends of State Historic Sites Edenton, will open the event with a brief history of the clock. At exactly 5 p.m., the courthouse bells will ring out as the clock resumes keeping time. Local officials will also highlight other improvements underway in Edenton’s historic downtown.
The courthouse has had a clock for 200 years, with the first installed in September 1825. The current timepiece, crafted in 1891 by Seth Thomas Clo
