For the past 25 years, the Royal Oak Nature Society has been educating people about gardening and maintaining city grounds. Recently, the society joined efforts to plant trees around the Leo Mahany / Harold Meininger Senior Community Center.

The Fred A. and Barbara M. Erb Family Foundation provided grants to Royal Oak projects, most notably a $250,000 grant to the Royal Oak Civic Foundation in 2023 for the Fred A. Erb Arboretum, supporting native tree plantings and infrastructure improvements. Bob Muller has worked with the Nature Society, and the former engineer along with other volunteers have been planting 100 Michigan native tree species.
