Billy Porter has stepped back from his role in Broadway's Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club following a serious health diagnosis. The 55-year-old actor has been diagnosed with what producers described as a "serious case" of sepsis. As a result, he will not be able to continue in the role of the Emcee, prioritising his health as advised by his doctors.

The announcement was made on Sunday, revealing that the show will conclude its run earlier than planned. Originally scheduled to continue until October 19, the production will now end on September 21. A statement in The New York Times confirmed that Porter's doctors are optimistic about his recovery, advising him to maintain a restful schedule over the next few weeks.

Adam Speers, a producer with ATG Productions, expressed his admiration for Porter’s contributions to the show. He stated, "It is with a heavy heart that we have made the painful decision to end our Broadway run on September 21. On behalf of all the producers, we’re so honoured to have been able to bring this version of John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Joe Masteroff’s important masterpiece, Cabaret, to New York. Billy was an extraordinary Emcee, bringing his signature passion and remarkable talent. We wish Billy a speedy recovery and I look forward to working with him again in the very near future."

Longtime alternates Marty Lauter and David Merino will take over the Emcee role for the remaining performances. Marisha Wallace will continue to portray Sally Bowles until the end of the run. Cabaret began its Broadway performances in April 2024, and by the time it concludes, there will have been 18 preview performances and 592 regular performances.

This health issue follows Porter's recent withdrawal from a performance at Manchester Pride, where he cited illness as the reason for his absence just hours before he was due to take the stage. Organisers at the event expressed their disappointment, stating, "We’re sad to share that Billy Porter will no longer be able to perform at Mardi Gras today due to illness. We know many of you were looking forward to their set as we were. Get well soon Billy, love from the Manchester Pride Team."
