COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Authorities said a man is behind bars after a South Carolina state trooper was hit during a traffic stop early Sunday.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department said 35-year-old Alex Bookert was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and endangering services personnel.

RCSD said deputies were called to a wreck on Interstate 77 near mile marker 8 at around 12:15 a.m. The department said deputies learned the trooper was conducting a traffic stop when he was struck by a vehicle allegedly driven by Bookert.

Bookert reportedly stopped and deputies noted he “showed signs of impairment.” The trooper was taken to a hospital, but no additional word was provided on their condition.
