Sylvester Stallone is getting candid about his upbringing.

During a Sept. 7 appearance on Sunday Sitdown with Willie Geist, Stallone recalled the abuse he faced by his father as a kid and how it ultimately made him want to be an actor.

"There’s this incredible sense of emptiness because why couldn’t it have been like, a pleasant upbringing? Why did it have to be so dark?" he said. "But would I have been here if it was a pleasant — hell, like, 'The Waltons'? It wasn’t."

Having a tumultuous relationship with his father, he started to look for "a real male role model" elsewhere, he said. That's when his love for acting and performance began.
