WASHINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) -- The city of Washington brought the community together Sunday afternoon to honor the lives lost in the September 11th attacks during its annual remembrance ceremony.

Held at the Veterans Memorial Park’s Helicopter Memorial, the event opened with music from bagpiper Scott Whitman and a procession of dignitaries, police, and fire personnel.

Boy Scouts led the Pledge of Allegiance, with sisters Samantha and Anna Vaughn performing the National Anthem.

Prayers and scripture readings were offered by Pastor Dave Jane and Washington Fire Department Captain Jake Spitzer, followed by remarks from city and county leaders.

Northern Tazewell Fire Chief David Houseworth reminded attendees why ceremonies like this are so important.
