Former prime minister John Howard has declared Australia’s pursuit of net zero emissions targets is not worth the cost.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sky News host Sharri Markson, Mr Howard said he has become a “climate change agnostic”.

He also said he was unconvinced that radical cuts to carbon emissions will deliver the benefits claimed.

“I’ve become a climate change agnostic and I think the world is making a mistake by going overboard about climate change,” Mr Howard said.

“What I mean by that is that I’m not persuaded that the world will come to an end if we don’t reduce carbon emissions in a radical way.

“I’m doubtful that net zero is worth the price we’re paying for it.”
