FOXBORO — It wasn’t the debut Mike Vrabel envisioned.

The New England Patriots ’ opener resembled a team that’s become all too common at 1 Patriot Place. The Patriots fell apart offensively in the second half, hindered by penalties and third-down inefficiencies, as the Las Vegas Raiders surrendered just a late field goal over the final 30 minutes.

Geno Smith gashed New England’s secondary for 362 yards and a 20-13 Week 1 win at Gillette Stadium on Sunday. A year after the Raiders won just four games — the same total as New England — coach Pete Carroll has Las Vegas playing a better brand of football.
