MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - IRONMAN Wisconsin returned to Madison this weekend for its 23rd running, continuing a fall tradition that blends endurance sport with local pride.
More than 2,500 athletes filled Lake Monona early Sunday morning before climbing the Monona Terrace helix, biking through Dane County’s hills and farmland, and finishing with a run through campus to the State Capitol.
Organizers say it’s become a weekend Madison looks forward to every year.
“You know, this weekend continues to always prove itself to be one of the best weekends of Madison,” said Jamie Patrick, Executive Vice President of the Madison Area Sports Commission. “The event has been voted one of the top five Ironman races in the world. It’s kind of a rite of passage into fall. Most people think it’s Labor Day.
