Most Scots only need to look at the condition of their local roads or the pavement outside their house to see how skint public services are. ‌

Councils are running on empty while politicians at Holyrood and Westminster are endlessly warning about the tough spending choices they face. ‌

The causes of this fiscal mess are multiple and no one party or government can shoulder the full blame. ‌

But the economic climate means our elected officials must be doubly careful when it comes to spending every last penny in the public coffers.

Taxpayers’ cash must be used extremely wisely when there’s not much of it going around.

So it’s less than inspiring to learn that £4million was handed out in golden goodbyes to public sector officials last year alone. ‌
