(WHTM) -- Nearly 40,000 pets die in house fire each year, according to American Humane, and a prevention effort is underway.

The Save Our Pets Project came to Lancaster County this weekend to hold a pet walk in Amos Herr Park.

What they're raising awareness for, though, is no walk in the park.

Proceeds go towards providing local fire companies with pet oxygen mask kits to help pets suffering from smoke inhalation after house fires.

"Unfortunately, we do see loss of life of pets and they are family and we want to make sure that they're not forgotten in those emergencies and to ensure that our first responders do have the tools that they need when they're on site fighting those fires, just as we do for our human family members to make sure our pets are also not forgotten," Jessica Rosito
